I’ve always built things in private. This blog is an attempt to build more in public.
Who am I?
I am a middle aged computer nerd living in Stockholm, Sweden with my beautiful wife and two wonderful children. I have always enjoyed working with computers and technical stuff since I was a teenager. I have worked in engineering my whole career, mostly on the operations side but have always loved creating stuff that solves actual problems for people. I am currently working as a Staff Engineer but have worked across support, architecture, product, and leadership throughout my career.
I see myself as a generalist with a broad range of technical skills that can help bridge the gap between different domains, like getting a developer and a network technician speaking the same language. Or getting buy-in from management on doing this non-obvious technical thing that will help us out in the long term. I often find myself being the person people ask for help because if I can’t help them I most likely can point them in the right direction and make sure they get the help they need.
Why blog?
Like most engineers I love building and learning new things. I have started so many side or hobby projects and pretty much all of them have become abandoned, but I have learned so much by doing them and that has helped me in my career to better understand people or problems better. So even if they were not completed, there was something of value in doing it for me.
Even when I’ve tried to not build stuff outside of work, there will be an idea that I really want to try because I think it would be cool if it worked. Or there might be something I feel passionate about at work but people don’t see it the same way I do. Or there is a business idea I really want to build because it would solve a problem.
I believe that writing forces me to actually bring my thoughts into a cohesive whole that I would not do if I was not putting it in writing. It helps me take a step back and see if it really is something that works or if something is missing.
My hope is that by writing or talking about the stuff I’m building, it will force me to finish them or at least get something out there that people can actually use.
Also, it is a lot easier to solicit feedback on something written than on some stray thoughts spoken to friends at the pub.
Somebody might learn something
I have learnt so much from other people writing about things on the internet and I feel that it has given me so much and it’s time for me to give something back into the collective knowledge that is the internet. Hopefully there will be useful things for you in this blog that you will find interesting or learn something new.
